Social workers will be at the high school Saturday as well as next week to help students and family members, the school district said.

Investigators said they found evidence at the scene leading them to believe that one girl took the life of the other before taking her own life, noting the investigation is still ongoing.

The 10th graders at Independence High School in Glendale had single gunshot wounds and a weapon was found near their bodies, police said. When she heard reports that two girls were shot, both of them sophomores, she grew concerned.

“This is not an active shooter situation, and we realized that once we got on the scene”, Breeden said.

One of her students said that May, who Ms Kieu had only just dropped off at school that morning, was dead. They were found near an administration building.

Breeden says police received a call of a shooting just before 8 a.m. and they were on scene within minutes.

Phuong said May had a part in the school musical, and she wanted to learn to drive this summer.

The school was on lockdown for several hours. However, others who knew the girls have identified them as tenth graders Dorothy Dutiel and May Kieu. During the lockdown students issued updates on social media from their classrooms as dozens of anxious parents, who were barred from the campus, gathered in the parking lot of a nearby Wal-Mart store to await their children.

“It could be anybody”, Rice said. You don’t know who is being picked on.

The Republic also reported that parents were being bused to the school from a staging area to be reunited with their children and that some parents expressed frustration at the slow process.

Students typically are not allowed to use their mobile phones during lockdowns, but as calls from parents flooded the district, officials asked teachers to have students call family, Mr Capistran said.

Cheryl Rice said she went to a store after a friend called about the shooting and asked after Rice’s 15-year-old daughter. The shooting led police to lock down the school of around 2,000.
