Couple faces criticism for taking selfie in front of burning Dubai hotel
The Address Downtown was packed with residents and guests waiting for the famous firework display at the Burj Khalifa, which sits just across the lake from the Downtown Address, when the fire took hold around 9.30pm local time.

A massive fire broke out at the Address Hotel in Dubai on New Year’s Eve and the damage caused to the building is substantial.
The first images of the damaged Dubai hotel that caught fire on New Year’s Eve were released on Friday as a photographer who became trapped above the fiery inferno told his harrowing tale of survival.
Still authorities went ahead and conducted a midnight fireworks show at the nearby Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. “Total loss of a supertall building – requiring demolition and replacement – is a distinct possibility in the event of a fire”, they wrote.
Restaurants nearby opened for business, but served limited menus as civil defense officials cut natural gas to the area.
Alabbar added: “Dubai has once again demonstrated its inherent strength and positivity with the swift, professional, calm and caring response to the fire incident at The Address Downtown Dubai hotel”.
“Security services are investigating the causes and circumstances of the fire”, said the statement. But the fireworks show went on.
Mr Oxby, who spent the new year period in the United Arab Emirates, visiting his daughter Rachael, gave an eyewitness account of the devastating fire that he said engulfed the building in minutes.
Al Mazeina praised the exceptional collaboration between all the entities that are part of the Crisis Management Committee and the extraordinary efficiency of the Dubai Civil Defence in controlling the fire and helping avoid serious injuries or causalities.
But the new rules do not apply to buildings erected before that year, and Barry noted that the vast majority of the country’s skyscrapers fell outside the regulations; the Address Downtown was completed in 2008.
“It is great that they have given us accommodation and we are getting breakfast, lunch and dinner”.
“Our immediate priority was ensuring the safety of our guests and colleagues, and we evacuated all of them safely in record time in a most orderly fashion”.
