Court Documents: Paterno Was Told Of Sandusky Abuse In 1976

“‘Specifically. Yes… I was shocked, disappointed, offended”.

“My mind was manipulated so bad that you think like some of this stuff is normal”, John Doe 75 said. “You’re not going to do anything else?”

He said Paterno then “just walked away”.

Greg Schiano has denied having any knowledge of sexual abuse by Jerry Sandusky when the two were working together at Penn State. Paterno said he relayed the information to his bosses.

As previously reported by CNN, documents filed in the case in May indicate that Paterno was aware of allegations against Sandusky as early as 1976.

McQueary’s 2015 deposition was unsealed Tuesday along with several other court documents, including a Sandusky accuser’s testimony that he told Joe Paterno in 1976 he was abused by Sandusky. “Ignoring allegations of child sexual abuse would be entirely inconsistent with the man his family knew”. Most significantly, there is extensive evidence that stands in stark contrast to this claim. In addition to settling 32 civil lawsuits related to the Sandusky scandal, Penn State chose to take down a statue of Joe Paterno after allegations surfaced that Paterno may have known of Sandusky’s activities.

The once-beloved coach’s downfall was precipitated by a grand jury finding that Paterno was told in 2002 by a graduate coaching assistant that he saw Sandusky raping a boy in a Penn State shower and that Paterno more or less shrugged.

Bradley worked at his alma mater from 1979-2011 while Schiano and McQueary were Nittany Lions assistants from 1990-95 and 2004-11, respectively.

The newly unsealed documents also provide additional information about encounters in 1987 and 1988 that accusers say were witnessed by coaching staff.

“[Bradley] said he knew of some things… If it sounds like I’m defending him – it probably does – I just can’t believe it”. He also had a failed attempt in the National Football League coaching the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano is one; UCLA defensive coordinator Tom Bradley is another.

McQueary testified that this was true, and that both he and Bradley were indeed frustrated by Sandusky’s presence and would complain about it to each other. The boy and Sandusky were alone in a coaches’ meeting room, and Sandusky was touching the boy, Doe testified, when assistant coach Joe Sarra walked into the meeting room.

Barron said Penn State’s concern has been, and remains, with the “victims of Sandusky”.

Lawyer Eric Anderson said the school “made little effort, if any, to verify the credibility of the claims of the individuals”. The school has paid out over $90-million to more than 30 plaintiffs that have filed claims against the school.
