The students charged that the police are behaving in a high-handed manner and making every effort to stop the conduct of the “Beef festival”.
Putting an end to the ongoing controversy over the proposed beef festival and pork festival on the Osmania University campus, a city court on Monday issued a status quo order till December 21. In his petition, he mentioned that the festival violates provisions of various Acts such as Prevention to Cruelty of Animals Act, 1960, Andhra Pradesh Prohibition of Cow Slaughter and Animal Preservation Act, 1977. Calling the arrests unwarranted, Shankar, the organiser of the planned “beef festival” said, “We condemn the arrests made by the police”.
“The members of the student community and others are requested to cooperate in this regard”.
Some student organisations had planned a beef festival at the University on December 10. Meanwhile, the OU Arts College had more number of police personnel than students on Monday as they stalled a 5-km rally in support of the festival, which is slated for December 10. However, the police who threw a security dragnet on the campus expecting trouble, caught all the sloganeering students near the B-Hostel building and bundled them into police vans.

Adding to the quagmire is the city, BJP MLA Raja Singh, who threatens to conduct Gau Puja on the campus in view of various developments with regard to proposed festivities in the Osmania University campus in next eight days. They also approached state human rights commission, seeking protection for the beef festival. To maintain peace and harmony on the university campus, no festivity is allowed, Hyderabad East Zone DCP E Ravinder said.
