Chelsea chose the Belgium global over Petr Cech two years ago because they saw him as the long-term solution.

The Belgium worldwide has been regularly linked with a move back to La Liga – where he spent three years on loan at Atletico Madrid – since replacing Petr Cech as No. 1 at Stamford Bridge.

The Belgium shotstopper signed for Chelsea from Genk, but was immediately loaned out to Atletico for three seasons.

He added: “When I left Spain it was clear that one day I would return there”.

By then Real Madrid might be in the market for a new keeper, and with Florentino Perez a long-standing admirer of the Belgium global, Courtois made the somewhat startling admission that Madrid had been in touch with him over the previous year.

“I miss not just the club [Atletico] but Madrid and the country”. From the first minute there I feel in love with Spain, with the people and the way of life. I still maintain eating dinner and then an afternoon nap, most of the television I see is Spanish…

Speaking in an interview with Spanish newspaper Marca, Courtois said he still feels a strong connection to Spain, where he developed into one of the world’s best goalkeepers.

‘When I said goodbye [to Atletico] I had a bad time.

Asked about his former coach he said: ‘[Mourinho] works very well on tactics and he is a victor.
