Cousins’ 4-TD day vs porous D leads ‘Skins past Saints 47-14

“You definitely see progress every week”, Gruden said of Cousins. That doesn’t mean I want him to be the coach of the defense.

Giving up yards and points in chunks yet again, the Saints allowed Cousins to throw a career-best four touchdown passes and register a highest-possible passer rating of 158.3 in Washington’s 47-14 victory over New Orleans on Sunday.

The 33-point margin of victory was Washington’s largest since beating San Francisco 52-17 in 2005.

Cousins’ father, Don, was attending his first game of the season after undergoing cancer treatments throughout the summer and fall. Cousins hit Reed for an 8-yard touchdown to make it 37-14 with 11 seconds left in the third quarter.

On Sunday, the three other division members – the Giants, Eagles, Cowboys – all lost, so Washington is tied with Philadelphia for second place, a half-game behind NY.

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton declined to comment directly on potential changes to the coaching staff or personnel during the upcoming bye week.

“We had a good week of practice, I’ll be honest with you, I paid close attention to it in the second half – I think there was a lot of frustration”, Payton said.

The Redskins passing game was impressive as Cousins went 20-25 for 324 yards and 4 TD pass. The running game was also revitalized as the Redskins ran up 213 yards rushing with Alfred Morris leading the way with 93 yards on 15 carries. The Redskins could have pushed the Patriots in a 27-10 loss, but seven dropped passes prevented Washington from getting past itself, let alone the defending Super Bowl champions.

For what it’s worth, New Orleans just fired defensive coordinator Rob Ryan on Monday. Two plays later, Brees threw a bullet to Cooks on a slant for the touchdown.

Washington’s opening possession set the tone. There was one particular instance where Matt Jones strung it out all the way to the right side and was able to turn a negative play into a decent gain thanks to a single push from Brandon Scherff that sent his man flying five yards down the field.

“It’s been kind of tough, but it’s part of life”, Cousins said. “I feel like he’s putting in hard work and that’s given him confidence to know that he’s going to go perform on the field”.

Browners’s actions are absolutely DISGRACEFUL; and if the Saints didn’t desperately need Browner especially now with the MCL knee injury suffered yesterday by fellow CB Keenan Lewis, it would be easy to envision the Saints taking disciplinary measures of their own.
