Cowboys Acquire Quarterback Matt Cassel from Bills

Quarterback Matt Cassel has been acquired by the Dallas Cowboys from the Buffalo Bills, says ESPN. The Cowboys will reportedly get a 2017 seventh-round draft pick with Cassel, while giving up a 2017 fifth-round pick, according to NFL Media’s Albert Breer. Cassel joined the Bills during the offseason but was beaten out for the starting job in Buffalo by Tyrod Taylor.

2 – Development – As the third quarterback on the depth chart, opportunities for Manuel to truly advance and develop his game were limited to running the scout team each week. Le’Veon Bell, the Steelers’ All-Pro tailback, returns from a two-game suspension this weekend, and coach Mike Tomlin said Bell will be the starter. Due to a need of a backup QB emerging in Big D, Dallas brought in a number of veteran QBs for a workout on Tuesday including Christian Ponder, Matt Flynn, Josh Johnson, and McLeod Bethel-Thompson.

In fact, they hope he never has to take a snap with Weeden performing well enough to keep the Cowboys afloat while Romo recovers. Based on a home schedule that includes eight games per season, that would be $1.6 million over the life of the contract.

He certainly looked like a different quarterback in place of Romo in Sunday’s 20-10 victory against the Philadelphia Eagles, completing 7-of-7 passes for 73 yards, including a 42-yard touchdown to Terrance Williams. Jerry Jones praised Weeden heading into practice this week, but clearly the Cowboys wanted to at least add another arm to the mix with Romo out.

In Romo’s absence, Brandon Weeden will be the starter, with Cassel installed as a backup.

Dallas acquires Cassel from Buffalo, also promotes former Prosser High and Boise State standout Kellen Moore from practice squad.
