IRVING, Texas – The Dallas Cowboys got to know Dak Prescott extremely well this offseason.

They tried to trade back into the first round for Paxton Lynch on Thursday night, but were unsuccessful.

With the last of four picks in the sixth round – and their final pick of the draft – the Cowboys took Baylor’s Rico Gathers at No. 217 overall.

Prescott has been on the Cowboys’ radar throughout the draft process.

Prescott is the first quarterback Dallas has drafted since 2009, when it drafted Stephen McGee. On top of that, he has Jason Garrett as his head coach, a guy who is a sharp quarterback guy and has done good work with Romo, as well as managed to string some good games together from a group of bad quarterbacks during the 2015 season. Jerry Jones said late Friday night that he was “very comfortable” with Kellen Moore as the backup. “When I got that call from Mr. Jones, it was a dream come true”.

He was the eighth quarterback taken. “Yes, as many as we won with (Matt) Cassel and (Brandon) Weeden”. The record setting Mississippi State signal caller was a hot topic of draft day discussion as the ‘Pokes are openly searching for an eventual replacement for aging and oft injured QB Tony Romo. Best case scenario is you have a starting quarterback at a reasonable price who can keep the offense on track when Romo moves on.

There were indications in recent weeks that Dallas had its eye on Prescott.

And the Cowboys pulled the trigger on Prescott with the 135th overall pick in the fourth round. But Cowboys fans can feel a little better about their options next season if they need to turn to a backup for any length of time.

Former Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott was selected in the fourth round with the 135th pick. He was arrested and charged with DUI in March
