Cowboys’ Jones: Dak Prescott Might Take Starting Quarterback Job From Tony Romo

The Cowboys don’t definitively know when Romo will be ready.

Prescott says he and quarterback Tony Romo exchanged text messages over the weekend after it was revealed that Romo suffered a broken bone in his back and is expected to miss 6 – 10 weeks.

The team could place Romo on short-term injured reserve, meaning Romo would be out for the first eight weeks of the season. Romo is projected to be out for the next 6-10 weeks and Cowboys fans were not happy, so they let Cliff know about it on social media & he doesn’t approve of it. Given the Chiefs also have Alex Smith, Nick Foles, Tyler Bray, and Kevin Hogan on their quarterback depth chart, they may be forced to outright cut Murray if they don’t receive a palatable trade offer.

The Cowboys have to wait to make their final cuts to get their roster down to 53, at which point they have to make a decision on Romo.

“We’re certainly getting our hands around it”, said Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones Wednesday at the team’s kickoff luncheon benefiting Happy Hill Farm.

Prescott’s presence on the roster along with the game-breaking abilities of Ezekiel Elliott give the Cowboys one of the most interesting opening day QB-RB duos in the National Football League, and a dynamic group in general that will be a lot of fun to watch every week. He missed 12 games last season and the Cowboys went 4-12. Dak Prescott has done nothing but impress in the preseason, yet Steven A. Smith has not spoken to highly of the Rookie QB.

If Romo can not play in the season opener, which is likely, Prescott is taking the starting role versus the New York Giants on September 11.

Prescott’s been sparkling through three preseason games, completing 39-of-50 passes for 454 yards with five touchdowns and zero turnovers, plus 53 rushing yards and two more scores on the ground. The Cowboys also struggled to develop a deep threat without Bryant, an All-Pro in 2014 when the Cowboys won the NFC East and a playoff game. “When Tony gets back, the team will be ready for him”.

In a conference Garrett stated, “We’ve gotten a lot of different timetables for when he can return”. It’s unfortunate for Tony that he has some of these things, but I think the last thing in the world we’re anxious about with Tony is being fragile. I’m sure Tony’s aware of that. “We’re gonna win games with Dak”.

There has been much debate about who could or should back up Tony Romo in the event that he was injured again.
