Cowboys might place Romo on IR

Romo suffered a fracture to his lower back and the Cowboys have yet to put a time table on when we may see Romo again.

While also stressing that Romo should come back this season and that this new injury isn’t almost as severe as the ones that kept the 36-year-old out of all but four games last season, Jerry Jones offered high praise for the fourth-round Mississippi State selection who’s dazzled during the preseason, completing 39 of his 50 passes for 454 yards and five touchdowns.

On Thursday evening, the Cowboys host the Texans, in the fourth and final preseason game for both teams. “Or at least the next six to 10 weeks”.

This, for the last five years or so, has been the risk with Romo. They haven’t, and it’s shown.

I know this would be a good problem to have, but what do you think this coaching staff and team do should Dak exceed all expectations with his performance and have this team sitting at say 6-2 upon Romo’s return?

There’s still a ton of season left at that point, but will Dak Prescott be able to do something the Cowboys’ backups weren’t able to do a year ago? No better example of how allowing him to develop could benefit the Cowboys is then Tony Romo himself.

To be sure, rookie quarterback Dak Prescott has looked impressive in the preseason.

Prescott leads the league in preseason passing yards with 454.

The rookie duo could provide boom potential for the Cowboys’ offense. He has the ability to stand in there and fire downfield, and also has enough athleticism to play quarterback in the NFL. Prescott had potential, but was not viewed as being as NFL-ready as the quarterbacks picked before him on the first two days of the draft.

In 2014, the four-time Pro Bowl player sustained a small fracture in his back and missed a loss to Arizona before leading the Cowboys to the NFC East title and their first playoff win since 2009.

One of the most important calls Dallas has to make has to do with the quarterbacks. Heading into the 2016 season, several teams are vying as the best in the league, but after their showing previous year, Carolina has to be on top.

“When Tony didn’t practice during training camp, Dak got a lot of time with the starters”, receiver Cole Beasley said.

There’s another silver lining, too. I’m just saying it will not surprise me to see his play in the preseason slow down as the transition into the regular season takes place.
