Cowboys QB Romo has broken bone in back

The Cowboys announced on Saturday that Romo has a broken bone in his back and will miss a good portion of the season.

He immediately grabbed at his back, crumpled on the field while trainers sprinted from the Dallas sideline and images of Romo’s injury problems from previous year immediately flashed to mind.

Reports suggest Romo could miss around half of the upcoming National Football League season but Garrett told the team’s website: “We’re going to monitor his condition day by day and we’ll see how he feels going forward”. Officially, there’s no timetable, though ESPN is reporting 6-10 weeks. “There’s no timeframe when he’s going to return”.

Although Garrett, in announcing the injury on Saturday, did not rule Romo out of playing in the Cowboys’ season opener on September 11 against the New York Giants, it appears likely that rookie Dak Prescott will start in Romo’s place.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports his sources told him Romo’s best-case scenario for a return is by mid-season.

During Thursday night’s 27-17 preseason loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Romo was tackled from behind by Cliff Avril on the third play from scrimmage as Romo scrambled from the pocket.

Dallas has gone 1-12 without Romo in the past two seasons, as compared to 15-4 with No. 9 behind center. Luckily for Cowboys fans, Dallas’ front office seems to have found a diamond in the fourth-round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He also refused to rule Romo out for the regular season opener on September 11.
