Cowboys score twice early in L.A.

Playing at their temporary home for the first time, the Rams were greeted by an announced crowd of 89,140. Nzeocha didn’t play last season because he was still recovering from a surgically-repaired knee, but he’s expected to be in the rotation this year.

Prescott’s only incompletions were two dropped passes by tight end Geoff Swaim. Here are the takeaways from the Rams victory.

But the Rams trailed 21-7, 5:15 into the second quarter, when Goff trotted onto the field to a large ovation.

Current Rams starter Case Keenum was efficient if unremarkable, completing six of seven passes for 58 yards before ceding to Goff. He may not have been the best player in the 2016 draft class, but the Rams were desperate for a long-term solution at quarterback, and with the move to Los Angeles, they needed an impact player fans could get excited about.

Another potential starting cornerback, E.J. Gaines, did not play because of a hamstring injury, and the Rams chose not to play defensive end Robert Quinn (who is in the final stages of recovery from a back injury) and Gurley. Combined, Higbee and Spruce had 11 receptions on 14 targets with 100 receiving yards and a touchdown. These two should be welcomed with open arms as the receiving game has not shined too well since the days of Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce.

Since Leary can not play center, it is hard to imagine he will even be active on gamedays this season, meaning both his talent and time will be wasted here in Dallas.

Later in the quarter, quarterback Dak Prescott hit wide receiver Dez Bryant for a 10-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 14-0. All of this against a Rams secondary that played without EJ Gaines and lost Janoris Jenkins and Rodney McLeod in the offseason. And Showers was capable, finishing 8 of 16 for 99 yards and showing good mobility. Terrance Williams led in receiving with 840 yards and three touchdowns while Jason Witten added 713 yards and three touchdowns.

Nobody should jump to any premature conclusions after one preseason game, but Prescott’s success on Saturday is certainly encouraging for a Cowboys team that went 1-11 without Tony Romo last season. The combination of the first game back in L.A., the Cowboys being a marquee opponent and the sheer size of the Coliseum gave the Rams a shot to break the record. I remember watching the highlights of those games on Christmas Eve while wearing a Santa Claus hat and giving my dad my Christmas wish list that consisted of mostly Sega Genesis titles.
