Cowboys to start Matt Cassel at QB in Week 7, report says

Dallas’ bye is set for Sunday, and the Cowboys don’t play again until October. 25, when they visit the New York Giants. Bryant sustained a foot injury during the first game, per Sports Center, while Romo fractured his clavicle during the second game against the Philadelphia Eagles, per a separate NFL.com report.

For the first time since the Cowboys acquired him in a September 22 trade with the Bills, Cassel served as the backup to Weeden.

“He’s worked hard, he’s a veteran player, he’s a smart guy, he’s been here for a little bit”, Garrett said at his Monday afternoon news conference, before the switch was finalized. “There are always levels of knowing something”. “We protected better. I think we were more adjusted to their speed and a few of the things they were doing – that 3-2 odd look that they ran was something that they hadn’t shown before, so not that we didn’t – I wouldn’t say know what to do, but we didn’t handle it well as we did later in the game”.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett wasn’t so kind. Dallas failed to score a touchdown for the first time since 2011, with Weeden completing five of 15 passes that were thrown more than five yards down the field. Also, it helps that the Cowboys are 2-0 in the division this season.

Cassel has a career record of 33-38 as a starting quarterback after losing his last two starts, which came last season in Minnesota. The earliest he can return is November 22 against Miami. You give a quarterback (Tom Brady) like that too many opportunities, he is going to take advantage.

The Cowboys have an extra week to prepare for the Giants.

Once it was determined a change was necessary, this is the week it needed to happen.

“I hope I come out guns blazing, I’m full of excitement, I’m full of juice, and I’m ready to go”, said Greg Hardy.

That was dissipating under Weeden. He lost his 11th straight game as a starter going back to his time as a first-round draft pick in Cleveland. First place takes home $100,000!

In Romo’s absence, the Cowboys have averaged 315.3 yards per game, including 201.3 yards passing. His team, the Dallas Cowboys was about to play Brady’s New England Patriots and the man was heckling Brady with taunts about his wife. They had no choice but to turn to Cassel.

PANTHERS’ KUECHLY WORKS: Carolina Panthers Major League Baseball Luke Kuechly returned to practice for the first time since suffering a concussion in the season-opening win against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“He’s certainly comfortable enough to play”, Garrett said. Weeden, Randle, and Darren McFadden just can’t seem to make the big plays that they need to make to keep the defense honest.
