Cowboys vs. Giants has special meaning for Mississippi

A year after the New York Giants gifted the Dallas Cowboys a Week 1 victory in the form of repeated clock-management blunders, their NFC East rival returned the favor on Sunday. Protecting the rookie quarterback may have been the reason for the caution, but in the National Football League the timid come up just short.

But for one week at least the results were the same, largely because the Cowboys had to settle for four field goals and conservative play-calling by coach Jason Garrett. If Dez comes down with either ball in the end zone, which we have seen him do time and again, we may be talking about a different outcome. It prevented the Cowboys from attempting a long field goal. Dallas had no timeouts left and time expired.

The perception is that Dak Prescott played like a rookie quarterback.

Playing in his first regular-season game in almost two years, Cruz caught the go-ahead touchdown from Eli Manning (19 of 28, 207 yards, three touchdowns and one pathetic interception) with 6:13 left in the game. It wasn’t the fact that they lost, it was the way they played the game on Sunday against the Giants, with too many miscues on offense, a lack of a strong defensive unit and the way the game ended for the Cowboys with the decision made by Terrance Williams on the final play of the game.

The result was the same, yet somehow it looked different than past year. They came up 1 yard short. “But we’re in better shape to not play that way or have that happen to us because we’re better offensively”. Oh, and a defense that never seemed to get a big stop during a 4-12 season a year ago failed again in the fourth quarter.

While Dez Bryant was back healthy, he managed just one reception for eight yards on five targets.

“We weren’t running plays just to run plays”, Pugh said. I thought he did a really good job. We’ll get better and rally behind him. That’s trite to say that. “But he kept it alive-that’s what he does”.

-Running back Ezekiel Elliott was drafted fourth overall by the Cowboys because he is considered a franchise running back.

Casillas said the Giants did nothing right in the loss to the Saints in New Orleans last season. He finished the game catching three balls for 34 yards and that includes the final play where NY played a prevent defense. That means he averaged just over 2.5 yards per carry.

“I think there’s a lot of confidence in this locker room”, said tight end Jason Witten, who combined with Cole Beasley for 17 of Prescott’s 25 completions with the Cowboys working mostly underneath the NY defense.
