Cowboys will sign Mark Sanchez as veteran backup quarterback

Sanchez was traded to Denver by the Philadelphia Eagles in March and was the favorite to replace the retired Peyton Manning and Brock Osweiler, who left the Broncos during free agency to join the Houston Texans in the offseason.

Meanwhile, the Vikings gave up a first and fourth-round draft pick to trade for Sam Bradford, who they will also have to pay upwards of $24 million through 2017 (the Eagles are on the hook for Bradford’s $11 million signing bonus). He was released by the Super Bowl 50 champions on Saturday when head coach Gary Kubiak named Trevoe Siemian as their starting QB for the season.

The 27-year-old Davis started two games for Cleveland last season and eight for the Rams the year before.

If Sanchez is the Broncos’ third-stringer, it makes little sense to keep him on the roster.

Siemian beat out veteran Mark Sanchez in a back-and-forth preseason.

If he’s released, the team would save roughly $3.5 million against the cap and recoup a seventh-round draft pick.

Sanchez, a seven-year veteran, went 20 of 30 for 219 yards and one touchdown as well as three turnovers (two fumbles, one interception) in game action this summer.

Lynch, the No. 26 pick overall in this year’s draft after a standout career at Memphis, was 13 for 22 for 214 yards and two scores, both to Jordan Taylor, but had an interception returned 29 yards for a touchdown by Gabe Martin. His combined completion percentage is a lowly 56.7%, having played in a total of 75 National Football League games.

Sanchez is expected to sign a contract with the Dallas Cowboys, a person familiar with the negotiations told USA TODAY Sports’ Tom Pelissero.

The game could not have started any better for the young signal-caller, his first pass of the night going 57 yards to the house thanks to a shifty move by Jordan Taylor who was victorious in a footrace to the end zone.

Lynch, deemed the franchise’s quarterback of the future, played the entirety of the Broncos’ preseason finale Thursday as another test to see if he’s capable of being Siemian’s backup.
