Chinese authorities have confirmed that 18 workers were killed after a temporary structure at a construction site gave way after being struck by a crane, state media reported Thursday.

Eighteen people have been killed and more than 30 injured after machinery collapsed at a China Communications Construction’s factory in southern China.
An official in Dongguan City said the crane toppled onto a two-storey building made of shipping containers. Four of them were in critical condition, while the city’s health department said that most of the injured suffered fractures and lacerations.
The company has allocated 20 million yuan to handle the situation in the mishap’s aftermath, Luo said. He added that a special team was also formed to comfort the families of the victims. The parent firm reportedly specializes in prefabricated buildings.
The bad weather that has been battering Guangdong Province with heavy rainfall, hail, thunderstorms and wind gusts the past three days has taken its toll on an employee dormitory when strong wind blew a steel gantry that fell on the accommodation.

The accident is the deadliest to strike the region since 74 people were left dead or missing when a man-made mountain of construction waste collapsed onto buildings in the nearby city of Shenzhen in December.
