Crash with life-threatening injuries shuts down part of Interstate 84

A Waterbury woman suffered serious, life threatening injuries when she drove across the median of Interstate 84 in Southington and crashed head-on into another vehicle. The highway remained shut down heading west as of just before noon and authorities said it could take a few hours to clear the scene.

Life Star was called to the crash, which happened around 9 a.m. Thursday morning and caused heavy traffic delays throughout the day. The agency said that lane reopened shortly after 10 a.m. A LifeStar helicopter was seen landing on the highway and transported a victim of the crash to the hospital.

State Police first said the crash involved two cars but later changed it to three.

Life Star responded to the crash scene, which is in the area of exits 31 and 30.

The Hyundai left the westbound section of the highway, traveled through the grassy median and then hit the Ram pickup head-on, according to a state police report. The man whose auto McCarthy struck head-on, David Elward, 51, of New Brunswick, Canada, was taken to Hartford Hospital by ambulance with suspected injuries.
