One person has been killed in the second accident and crews have declared it a mass casualty scene because of the number of victims involved.

Interstate 95 remains closed in both directions in Old Lyme following a truck fire on one side of the highway and a serious, multi-vehicle crash on the other side.

Life Star and multiple ambulances transported patients to the hospital.

The first crash involving a tractor trailer occurred about 4:30 a.m. on southbound I-95 near the Whipporwill Road overpass, according to police.

NBC Connecticut reported via Facebook and Twitter that Life Star was also called to the second accident scene.
