The unusual discoveries will most likely keep on coming.
The video has already garnered over 400,000 views. When the species was spotted, the researchers carefully sucked it so as it to study in detail.
Vecchione says that the cephalopod was likely frozen in fear of the enormous submersible looming in front of it, or else stunned by the bright lights being shined in its prominent peepers, like an underwater deer in headlights. “It could possibly take years for scientists to determine if it’s a new species”.
The Nautilus crew usually puts on air a lot of its dives not only for the advantage of amateur scientists and hobbyists, but for researchers present on shore. “It looks so fake!” one onlooker on board the E/V Nautilus says in the video. In 2014, scientists said they identified nearly 1,500 new species in the world’s oceans, and that number continues to increase. Mr Snuffleupagus from Sesame Street?
The latest weird marine discovery has come off the coast of California as a team of marine biologists have stumbled across what has been dubbed the “googly-eyed squid”.
This precious stubby squid was spotted by the Nautilus Live team just off the coast of California at a depth of almost 3,000 feet, and if you happen to have an obsession with cute animal videos like myself, you’ll be glad to know the scientists captured the whole adorable encounter on camera.
Scientists debate during the video if the little creature is an octopus, cuttlefish, or a squid. And even the scientists can’t handle it.
“It looks like they’re painted on”. In a live stream of the Nautlius’ undersea explorations, one researcher said the googly-eyed squid looks “like some little kid dropped their toy”. They have been spotted, though sightings have occurred at much lower depths, according to the page.
The Nautilus Research team has been known to find some rather interesting things with their UV, but this extremely adorable squid is by far the cutest.

Wishnak said the E/V Nautilus team was able to rule out cuttlefish, as the species is not found in the eastern Pacific Ocean.
