BNSF Railway Co crews have staunched the flow of ethanol from a freight train that derailed in Wisconsin after thousands of gallons of the denatured alcohol leaked into the Mississippi River, the company said on Sunday.

Emergency crews are racing to stop a derailed freight trains cars from leaking crude oil.

Around 8:50 a.m., approximately 32 rail cars out of 112 cars went off of the train tracks.

CP spokesman Andy Cummings told CBS News that there were no injuries or fires reported as a result of the incident.

Residents who evacuated dozens of homes in Watertown are still being kept away. Video footage of the derailment shows train carriages strewn across tracks atop a narrow causeway, which cuts through the Mississippi River’s center, and water can be seen on both sides of the ramp.

Senator Tammy Baldwin says the Alma and Watertown train derailments demonstrate the need for rail safety reform.

The Federal Railroad Administration is focusing on mechanical and track cause as the reason for derailment. The cars did not tip over, nor were they carrying any hazardous materials inside. Crews began installing track on Monday afternoon.

Cleanup work is well underway in the aftermath of a Canadian Pacific Railroad derailment that occurred shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday.

Cummings said that a few product spilled due to one of the tank cars being punctured. Six BNSF Railway cars loaded with crude oil derailed in March near Galena, Ill., with two of the cars bursting into flames. BNSF Railway said no one was hurt and it expected service to return by Monday morning.

The Federal Railroad Administration is investigation an oil train crash in Watertown, Wis., officials with agency said on Monday.

“The overall operation of the fire department went very well”, Michalek said, citing the training his department and its partners have undergone in handling railroad emergencies and other potential HAZMAT situations.
