Crimson Tide shuts out and moves on to national championship game
This year’s College Football Playoff title game is a match-up between the Clemson Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

No. 1 Clemson 37, No. 4 Oklahoma 17: Deshaun Watson turned in another stellar two-way performance, running for a touchdown, passing for another, and accounting for 332 yards to lead Clemson past Oklahoma in a semifinal game in Miami.
Even though Alabama owns a 12-3 all-time series edge over Clemson, the two southern powers have met only once since 1975. As ESPN points out, it nearly looked like Alabama was playing one of their non-conference games early on in the season against a FCS opponent, because of how much they dominated.
There was a point in Alabama’s dismembering of Michigan State on Thursday night when Spartans quarterback Connor Cook – reduced to a dinged, dazed and daffy mess by the Crimson Tide’s defense – looked up after another incomplete pass and mouthed the words, “They’re (expletive) everywhere”.
The Crimson Tide (13-1) will face No. 1 Clemson in the national championship game on January 11 in Arizona. On the field they wore T-shirts that read, “WON & NOT DONE” – with the ampersand replaced by a stylized Alabama “A”.
But for the loony lateral of a beefy tight end for a lucky Arkansas on fourth and 25 in overtime at Ole Miss on November 7, Alabama wouldn’t have qualified for the Southeastern Conference championship game even with a better overall record than Ole Miss.
From the decision of what time curfews would be to how they practiced, UA players weren’t in Dallas to have a good time. I had a chance to be on the field and talk to Coach (Nick) Saban and some of the staff members after the game.
Nick Saban said he saw something in his team coming into the Cotton Bowl that he had never seen before.
“They know and we know that we’re going to have to put a lot of people in the box to stop Derrick Henry”, said Mike Tressel, a co-defensive coordinator who has helped engineer coach Mark Dantonio’s dominant defenses during the latter’s nine-season run at Michigan State. He led the team to the first championship win in school history after the 1982 Orange Bowl against Nebraska, and said he thinks the Tigers can take home the title again this year. “It was just a matter of when”. He ran 20 times for 75 yards and scored two touchdowns.
Freshman wide receiver Calvin Ridley had 138 receiving yards on eight catches for two touchdowns.
Hogan completed 12 of 21 passes for 223 yards and one interception.
In addition to the two interceptions, the Tide defense had four quarterback sacks and six tackles for loss. Alabama extended its streak just before the new year with a 67-59 overtime victory against Jacksonville State on Tuesday. He has declared for the NFL Draft. Still within the afterglow of its Cotton Bowl romp, Alabama lastly became referred to as Coker’s team.

Scoring three touchdowns in the third quarter to make it 31-0, it was Jake Coker’s arm, and not Derrick Henry’s legs, that truly beat the Spartans. Throw in Wayne Gallman, who gained 150 yards on the ground, and Clemson has weapons that could – just maybe – cause problems for Alabama.
