The ESPN FC crew discuss Gareth Bale’s impact for Real’s opening game, and if he will pass Ronaldo as the main cog of the team.

“It’s extra motivation if I needed any, and it’s another reason to look forward and be excited about the season ahead”.

Ronaldo has won the Champions League and Euro 2016 with Portugal in 2016, and has been crowned UEFA’s “Best Player” this week at a ceremony in Monaco.

“I want to continue [like this], maintaining my level of performance, trying to win things for Madrid, keeping up my rate of goals and assists, helping my club achieve their goals of winning La Liga, the Champions League and Copa del Rey and qualifying Portugal for the World Cup. What I want is to be competitive for another year”.

Ronaldo scored three goals en route to the final of the tournament to equal France’s Michel Platini’s record of nine goals in the European Championship finals.

Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed his plans of retirement from football and he wants to quit at the “best club in the world”. It’s awesome. I wish to win tonight and I’m so proud.

The forward led Real Madrid to Champions League glory before captaining Portugal to victory at Euro 2016, their first major title. We won two incredible trophies. I have to thank you to my team mates – Real Madrid and national – because they helped me a lot to win these trophies, he said.

“But he will win for sure one day – I hope so”.
