Criticism fires up England for Euro’s last 16

The Dragons have had their odds cut from 66/1 to 40/1 to do the impossible and win the tournament, but with a potentially tough opponent in the round of 16 they’re 11/10 to bow out at the next stage.

Hodgson’s side have yet to score in the first half of a game in Euro 2016, and might easily have drawn all three of their matches had Daniel Sturridge not scored a late victor against Wales in Lens.

Asked what his team would have to do to take their fairytale into the quarter-finals, Hallgrimsson said: “I think everyone knows Iceland has to have the ideal game”.

And asked which area of their game needs to improve for them to progress to the quarter-finals and beyond, former Sunderland player Henderson added: “For the complete performance, definitely in front of goal”.

Hodgson also faced questions for the first time about a possible penalty shootout in the knockout stages, a scenario that seems more likely every time England fail to take their chances inside 90 minutes.

“I’m still not sure where the goals are going to come from”.

The outcome of last night’s game has certainly narrowed the permutations when it comes to picking out England’s next opponents.

“I think we have been a bit pedestrian and one-paced on the ball”.

“Obviously that created the space that allowed me, Rambo (Aaron Ramsey) and the midfielders to get on the ball more”.

“They seem happy to keep possession but that’s no use if you can’t hurt the opposition at the end of it”.

“We’ve got one job to do and that’s to win the game and that’s it”. “I’d like to think so but I’m still not totally convinced”.

Hodgson made six changes from the 2-1 victory over Wales and left captain Wayne Rooney on the bench.

Todd, though, did not necessarily agree with those who felt the decision backfired. “But for heart, we were a continent tonight”, said Coleman.

He said: “We beat them at Wembley (in a friendly earlier this month) and what’s more, they have taken two points from their games so far”.

“But we are still in the last 16 and who is to say the team we will play will be that much stronger?” If I had bedded down a partnership and one of them had got injured you would have been saying I should have tried others.

Were England to overcome that sizeable hurdle, they would advance to the second semi-final – in Marseille on Thursday, July 7.

“He’s done really well, all of the starting line-up that’s been playing have done well and this was a chance for those coming in to show the manager that they should be in the team”.

“When we do that we know we perform well and that goes for everyone, including the fans”.
