Hillary Clinton has released her tax return while criticising her opponent Donald Trump for failing to honour this tradition among American politicians running for president.

The Clinton campaign has already started accusing Trump of paying zero taxes, challenging him to release his own tax returns.

The returns show that the Clintons’ made about $10 million last year, which is a significant drop from the year before, when the duo reported a combined income of about $28 million. A spokesman for the governor’s office referred all tax-related questions to his vice presidential campaign.

The new video features 2012 Republican nominee Mitt Romney, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and other Republican and conservative voices saying Trump should release the tax material.

The Clintons main sources of income were Mr Clinton s paid speeches, to the tune of $5.2 million, and a payment to Hillary Clinton from the publisher of her last book, Simon & Schuster, for three million dollars.

They donated 9.8 per cent of their adjusted gross income to charity.

The IRS has said Trump is free to release his returns.

Trump had told The Associated Press in May that he would not release his returns before the November 8 elections. Taking into account their state and local taxes, the Clintons had a total effective tax rate of more than 43 percent.

But for months, financial experts have pointed out that nothing prevents a person from releasing his or her personal tax records during an audit. That tax rate complies with the Buffett Rule, which Clinton supports, that proposes anyone who makes $1 million or more in adjusted gross annual income should pay at least 30 percent in taxes. Public records show no gifts from Trump to his own namesake charity, the Donald J. Trump Foundation, since 2008.

Other significant sources of income included $3 million in book proceeds for Hillary, and $1.6 million for Bill’s consulting with GEMS Education, an worldwide education company, and Laureate Education, Inc., a for-profit education chain. Separately, returns from 1992-1999 were disclosed annually during Bill Clinton’s presidency, and prior returns released by her husband’s presidential campaign. That’s way down from the $10.5 million she garnered from speaking fees in 2014 and the $9.7 million she made in 2013.
