After demolishing box office records its first weekend in theaters, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is showing its prowess in awards season.
The Force Awakens has been given a late nomination for Best Picture in the Critics’ Choice awards, boosting its chances for other nods during Hollywood’s award season. However, the critics eventually saw the film and decided, in a special referendum held on Monday, to award the film with a belated Best Picture nomination. Due to secrecy around the film, it was not screened for critics prior to the BFCA making their nominations. The 2016 Critics’ Choice Award nominations were announced over a week ago, on December 14, but “Force Awakens” got a last-minute nomination today.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now nominated alongside The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Carol, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant, Room, Sicario and Spotlight.

The 21st annual Critics’ Choice Awards, hosted by T.J. Miller, will be held on January 17 and air live at 5 p.m. PT on A&E, Lifetime and LMN. Back in 2000, Robert Zemeckis Tom Hanks-starring Cast Away, a movie that seemed primed for awards consideration, had a similar situation and didnt screen early enough for consideration in the nomination phase. Consequently, BFCA bosses have made a decision to expand the 10-strong class to 11 to enter the Show star Wars sequel continuation in to the running.
