Crowd rallying against immigration bills growing at Capitol

Several area restaurants and stores will close their doors tomorrow because the “Day Without Latinos and Immigrants” rally could leave them short staffed.

“Latino voters want the same thing voters in general want”, said Walker.

“If you do damage to this community we will see negative consequences on the economy”, member of Voces de la Frontera, Mario Garcia Sierra, said. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and his primary opponents have been particularly vocal on the issue decrying “sanctuary cities”, calling on a southern border wall between the U.S and Mexico and questioning whether or not children born in the United States to undocumented immigrant parents should be given citizenship.

They’re asking supporters to take a stand tomorrow by walking off the job.

City officials are preparing for protests Thursday after two bills were passed in the Assembly that organizers claim relay anti-immigration sentiments in the community. The inbound lanes of East Washington Avenue will be restricted to one lane. Also, Madison Metro Buses that have stops near the Capitol will be dropping off and picking up on the outer loop.

Tomorrow’s “A Day Without Latinos” rally in Madison, Wis. has some state farmers anxious they’ll have enough workers left on the farm to milk the cows. They say a proposed Senate bill would block counties from issuing local identification cards to people who don’t have access to a state ID.

The “Wisconsin is not Arizona” signs that protesters held during the rallies weren’t only referring to the snow that lay on the ground Thursday in Madison.
