Crowds flock to ‘McDonald’s of the Future’ in Missouri

Chris Habiger has been a McDonald’s franchisee for 11 years.

The location is in St. Joseph, a little less than 50 miles north of Kansas City.

But he didn’t just renovate.

The “McDonald’s of the future” offering unlimited fries is now open in Mound City, Missouri, chosen probably because you’ll be the size of a small mountain after indulging in their all-you-can-eat french fry promotion. The move marks McDonald’s push to upgrade itself as a member of the “fast-casual” set, a group of somewhat higher end chain restaurants that includes the likes of Chipotle and Panera. Customizable burgers and sandwiches with such items as guacamole and maple bacon to “make your burger special”. The dessert bar has its own unlimited options, from waffle cones and signature sundaes to diced apple toppings with hot fudge and waffle pieces. Table service. Armchairs and couches for hanging out.

The Habingers had to halt new orders on opening day – August 4 – at approximately 1:30 p.m., since its 100 employees couldn’t meet the demand of a crowded dining room and play area, not to mention an intense drive-thru line. The couple’s company, Habiger West, has hired more than 100 new employees for the new restaurant.

Habiger and his wife Karri own seven McDonald’s in the area.

One customer dubbed it the nicest looking restaurant in St. Joseph.

“I’m an entrepreneur, and it’s about being creative and taking risks”, Chris Habiger said.

“The demand has been like off the charts and we are doing the best we can to take care of our customers as quickly as possible”. Larger portions and super-sized combos are also a major contributor to America’s weight problem, and there’s nothing more super-sized than never-ending buckets of McDonald’s french fries.
