Crude is down, so why are gas prices up?

A gallon of gas spiked to $4.24 in June of 2013 in Michigan because of technical problems at Midwestern refineries.

The BP refinery in Indiana is the seventh largest in the nation.

Piping inside the 240,000 bpd CDU, called Pipestill 12, which processes heavy sour oil crude, was damaged in a malfunction on Saturday.

Wholesale gasoline in Chicago jumped by 82.5 cents a gallon in the past two days to an 80-cent premium to futures.

DeHaan said today’s hike could look like a bargain compared to next week.

Late last year gasoline prices briefly dipped below $2 a gallon for the first time since 2009, and they may be headed there again. The cheapest prices in the Dayton-area were $2.33 a gallon on Costco in Centeville and Sam’s Club in Washington Twp., according to GasBuddy.com.

BP spokesman Scott Dean declined to discuss operations at the oil major’s largest refinery in the United States.

“The tip-of-the-iceberg stations are already raising prices, or will do so in the next few hours”, DeHaan said by phone Tuesday.
