Cruz and Kasich: One endorses Trump, the other stays silent

The endorsement surprised – and even angered – a host of conservatives who had looked to Cruz as the standard-bearer of the #NeverTrump movement, a man who had publicly refused to endorse the nominee at the Republican National Convention, declaring instead: “Vote your conscience!”

“A year ago, I pledged to endorse the Republican nominee, and I am honouring that commitment”.

“I think in a race this close, every tiny, little bit helps, so I don’t think it’s a game changer, but it certainly keeps us moving in the right direction”, Wendelboe said.

“Second, even though I have had areas of significant disagreement with our nominee, by any measure Hillary Clinton is wholly unacceptable, that’s why I have always been #NeverHillary”, he said.

Days ahead of the crucial first presidential debate, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump scored a major endorsement after Senator Ted Cruz said he would vote for his former bitter primary rival.

In a three-sentence statement yesterday, Trump changed his tune, saying he was “greatly honored” by Cruz’s backing and called him “a tough and brilliant opponent”. Kasich should endorse Trump now, before the first debate, and it would be a good follow up on Cruz’s announcement to unify the Republican Party. The vast majority of calls coming into Cruz’s office had turned increasingly negative in recent weeks with many voters urging him to support Trump to prevent a Clinton victory, according to Republicans familiar with the situation.

“If somebody said that about my dad, they would never have me as a supporter for anything”, Kaine said as he campaigned in Texas. The Republicans spoke on the condition of anonymity because these were internal discussions. Appointing Cruz to the Supreme Court would be a smart move for both Trump and Cruz.

“This really now unifies conservatives and Republicans around Donald Trump”, said Corey Stewart, Donald Trump’s Virginia campaign chairman.

By hanging with Donald Trump throughout the primary and being one of the few campaigns to actually beat him in some states, Cruz showed strength and resolve. And as recently as this week, some warned they would not work for Cruz again if he officially endorsed Trump.

Cruz also cited Trump’s opposition to Obamacare and his views on immigration.
