Cruz backers chant 2020 as 2nd White House run possible

Sorrell said he hopes Cruz talks tonight about why it’s important to keep Hillary Clinton out of the White House.

Dick Black, a Virginia state senator and pro-Cruz delegate, said that the hold-outs needed to get behind Trump’s candidacy.

Jones said Cruz’s motives are likely less tied to supporting Trump and uniting the party and more about remaining relevant to his supporters to take another run at the presidency in 2020 or 2024.

Eubank said she’s not concerned about whether Cruz endorses Trump.

The freshman lawmaker with Texas-size political ambitions has stopped short of a full-throated endorsement of Trump, his bitter primary rival who often mocked him as “Lyin’ Ted”.

Holmes said Cruz do not indicate whether he would endorse Trump during his speech tonight. Roe did say that Trump and Cruz had spoken on Tuesday. I think Ted Cruz understands that principle. Cruz has effectively placed a risky bet that the Republican Party will judge Trump harshly and reward him in the new era for not caving. Mrs. Clinton’s campaign promises include more than $1 trillion in big-government spending.

For all of Trump’s efforts to unify the party, one former presidential rival has resisted Trump’s overtures entirely.

“I will not be voting for Trump in November”, he said at the convention in Cleveland.

Trump had said much the same about Cruz, including insulting Cruz’s wife and suggesting Cruz’s father may have been involved in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Ted Cruz nominated as the GOP’s presidential candidate.

“Jeff, did you email them to fly the plane right when I said that?” he asked his former campaign manager, Jeff Roe.

Cruz has already announced he will run for re-election to the Senate in 2018, but his advisers haven’t been coy either about another presidential run.

At the same time, King said, the primetime spotlight arguably is a second chance at a command performance for Cruz to display his oratorical heft and intellectual acumen.

Manafort said there will be less emphasis on Trump’s signature issues that he highlighted during the GOP primary, such as a temporary ban on Muslim immigration and building a wall between the USA and Mexico.

When Cruz walks out onto the stage Wednesday, expect a lot of rhetoric attacking Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and a list of personal views on issues, but not a lot of Trump accolades, said James Henson, director of the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas at Austin.

The Texas senator is set to deliver his prime-time address in Cleveland – with no indication yet that he plans to endorse the Republican nominee.

“What I do know is that everyone of us has an obligation to follow our conscience, to speak the truth, and truth is unchanging”, he said.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who was considered for running mate before Trump ultimately chose Pence, delivered one of the toughest speeches of the night on Clinton.

Primary opponents who later try to publicly embrace each other for the good the party is common, but there is little that was common in this year’s Republican fight.
