Cruz campaign: We could have stopped Trump if Rubio became running mate

Will Ted Cruz re-enter the GOP presidential race?

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, who dropped out of the Republican presidential race a week ago after a crushing loss in IN, on Tuesday flirted with the idea of tossing his hat back into the ring.

Cruz suggested if he were to win in Nebraska and saw a “path to victory” at the convention, he would consider restarting his presidential campaign, despite dropping out last week after being beaten badly in Indiana.

The Texas senator, who suspended his presidential campaign last week after a crushing loss in the must-win in primary, said there is still plenty of time for him to make a decision on whom he will be voting for and supporting. “If that changes, we will certainly respond accordingly”, the Texas senator said.

Following his May 3 loss in IN to Donald Trump, Cruz announced his decision to suspend his campaign.

Trump last week won IN, where Cruz had made a last stand, with 53.3 percent of the votes, compared to Cruz’s 36.6 percent. “I would note, it’s not a choice we as voters have to make today”, Cruz said when asked about supporting Trump.

As of yesterday, Cruz had 564 delegates as against Trumps 1,071.

“I think we need to watch and see what the candidates do”, he said.

But Cruz admitted that he’s not “holding his breath”.

Wounded by the scandals, his campaign performed poorly in the primaries and Hart dropped out shortly thereafter.

Cruz declined to endorse Trump and would not say whether his own supporters should do so either.

The suspended 2016 presidential candidate slammed the role of the media and a small group of media executives who, as he said, manipulated coverage to benefit the candidate that they had chosen to win. In selecting Trump, a local analyst wrote, those Republicans “retreated from the culture wars”.

The surprising comments come as Trump begins his transition to a general campaign strategy – taking on likely Democratic rival Hillary Clinton more aggressively and even reportedly naming confidant Corey Lewandowski to lead his running-mate vetting process.

Cruz, however, spoke Tuesday about the state of the GOP primary race in qualified terms. Trump supporters were NOT happy to hear this.
