Cruz Doubles Down on Refusal to Endorse Trump at Republican Convention

About the only thing that most everyone agrees on about Sen. “Wow, Ted Cruz got booed off the stage, didn’t honour the pledge!”

The morning after, Cruz wasn’t any more conciliatory. “It was audacious for what his speech did not do”.

Former RNC chair Haley Barbour said Cruz’s speech was a losing gamble for 2020, the year of the next presidential campaign.

Cruz shot back, “This is not politics!”

It’s a project proving harder than uniting Republicans behind their distaste for another brand they know well: The Clintons.

Ivanka Trump got an enthusiastic welcome at the Republican National Convention.

Yet in 2016, another overwhelmingly white gathering of Republican convention delegates -the makeup clear on television images – has nominated an all-white male ticket: businessman Donald Trump and in governor Mike Pence. “It’s about our principals”, said Grant Moody, who spoke from the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

That it was a courageous and principled stand does not, however, preclude it from being self-interested.

Trump, however, tried to downplay the notion of division in the party. Cruz’s speech was pure red meat, and his base is the tea partiers, not Washington insiders.

Gov. Terry Branstad said Cruz did a good job in delivering his remarks, “but I think he made a mistake by not going one step forward and actually doing the endorsement”. “He teased the audience”. If true, that means Trump’s staff either somehow thought that this debacle would rebound to his benefit, or, even worse, that they were more intent upon punishing Cruz over a personal slight than presenting a positive and unified face to American voters.

Call it the unconventional convention. Many included supporters of Cruz who had hoped to give him one last shot at the nomination, even if only symbolically.

Both Fagen, now a partner at the public affairs firm DDC, and Murphy said at the forum that Trump could use that conspicuous coolness to burnish his outsider credentials. The headlines moved on to other convention matters.

“As president, my father will change the labor laws that were put in place at a time when women weren’t a significant portion of the workplace, and he will focus on making quality childcare affordable and accessible for all”, Ivanka Trump said.

Ivanka explained that she doesn’t identify as a Republican or a Democrat, saying that as a millennial, “more than party affiliation, I [vote] on what I believe is right for my family and for my country”.

Cruz was greeted with a standing ovation when he took the stage Wednesday night at the Quicken Loans Arena, and left amid deafening boos after he failed to endorse the Republican presidential nominee. But he recorded a video message that was played here Wednesday night in which he said, “The time for fighting each other is over”. Last year, Pence wrote the CEOs of Aetna, GE and Travelers, urging them to come to his state.

In that pivotal political moment, Reagan delivered a powerful speech and endorsed Ford.

In his speech, Trump did not repeat comments made to The New York Times that the United States might abandon its North Atlantic Treaty Organisation military commitments if he were president.

But if Trump wins, many feel that Cruz will lose clout and prestige.

“I am not in the habit of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my father”, Cruz said at a meeting with the Texas delegation in Cleveland.

There’s only one reason Chris Christie thinks Ted Cruz’s speech is terrible and selfish – because he refused to worship at the altar of Donald Trump.

Angry chants of “We want Trump!” and “Endorse Trump!” grew louder as the senator came to the end of his speech.

“The crowd was unruly”, King said. Considering The Apprentice was the main thing Trump had going for the better part of a decade, he was steeped in that particular culture.
