Cruz endorses Trump in presidential race despite insults

But even prior to the election, Trump has already thrown a few crumbs Cruz’s way. “Submissive conformity to Trump – a man who personally slandered Cruz’s family and hasn’t apologized – just cements Trump as the unopposed alpha in the GOP and hangs Cruz’s conservative resistance out to dry”. Many have noted that Trump has been acting more “presidential” as of late, and that might be why Cruz is deciding to jump on board.

During the campaign for the Republican presidential nomination, both Cruz and Trump derided as amnesty any efforts to allow 11 million unauthorized immigrants to remain in the U.S. Both spoke at a September 2015 rally at the U.S. Capitol in opposition to the Iran nuclear deal.

The contest between Cruz and Trump got particularly nasty towards the end: Trump routinely referred to his rival as “Lyin’ Ted”.

“I like Ted, he’s fine”.

But it appears Cruz has, in fact, backed down, despite having told voters in Cleveland in August that, following attacks by Trump against his father and his wife, he would not “come like a servile puppy dog” and embrace the billionaire businessman. Donald, you’re a sniveling coward. “Leave Heidi the hell alone”.

He said his decision to back Trump also was in keeping with his pledge to support the victor of the GOP presidential nomination. Cruz’s fellow Republican lawmakers panned his convention speech as further dividing the party. “I mean the whole thing is ridiculous”. And nobody even brings it up. “And nobody talks about it”. Cruz was a critical of Trump on the campaign trail, calling him a “pathological liar” and “amoral”.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz announced Friday, via a Facebook note, that he is officially endorsing Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump after pointedly refusing to do so at the Republican National Convention in July.

Mr Cruz, who was involved in the contest to become the nominee, said: “I am not in the habit of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my father”.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump speaks during a campaign rally. “And if you don’t want to see a Hillary Clinton presidency, I encourage you to vote for him”, he wrote. In his remarks, Cruz largely echoed his statement earlier today endorsing Trump, saying one his main reasons was to make good on the unity pledge.

In other words, if today’s announcement makes it seem as if Cruz is a craven opportunist, far more interested in partisan gamesmanship than deeply held principles, it’s probably because he’s making it hard to draw any other conclusion. Ted Cruz (R-TX) said he would be voting for him. When Trump, now the GOP nominee, went after Cruz’s dad and wife, Cruz said, he “abrogated” a GOP unity pledge all the candidates signed past year. First, last year, I promised to support the Republican nominee. “I think it’s the worst political miscalculation of my lifetime”, Deace wrote in one of a series of tweets.

And second, his belief that Democrat Hillary Clinton is “wholly unacceptable”.
