Cruz faces political fallout for Trump non-endorsement – will it last?

Senator Cruz, who came in second to Mr Trump in the race for the Republican nomination after a bitter and personal campaign, was booed by delegates at the gathering in Cleveland on Wednesday night when he gave a speech but did not endorse Mr Trump.

Cruz doubled-down on his message on Thursday morning, telling Texas delegates that he could not follow through on the pledge he had made during the primaries to support the Republican nominee regardless of who it might be.

“We deserve leaders who stand for principle, who unite us all behind shared values, who cast aside anger for love. I’ve seen nothing but unity”, Schneider said.

It’s a point Trump often makes, as he urged Romney to be a more omnipresent figure in media in the stretch run of the 2012 campaign – with appearances on late-night television and other mass-market shows.

His Tuesday night speech drew loud boos from Trump supporters as they realized he was not going to throw the backing behind the man who was scheduled to accept the GOP nomination for president Thursday night.

Donald Trump ended his party’s convention Thursday the way he began his history-making campaign: attacking the political establishment, playing to voters’ fears of crime and foreigners, and making bold promises to fix America’s ills. Cruz later explained he would not endorse Trump like a “servile puppy dog” after the Manhattan real estate mogul had attacked his wife and father.

McCarty believes Cruz is taking things too personally. It may be because she’s been around as a political figure for so long or because her email server makes her look like she thinks she’s above the law but the hatred of her here is vicious and visceral. “What about the picture that was released of Melania on the rug?”

The riled up crowd responded to Trump’s allegations against Clinton by chanting “Lock her up!” It’s about the country.

Cruz, known as a ideologue of the conservative Tea Party movement who strongly favors small government, has been a controversial figure in the party himself, upsetting fellow Republicans in Congress by plowing his own furrow. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told CNN that he “totally” disagrees with Trump’s suggestion that US support could be conditional. They knew exactly what I was going to say.

If you want the politically correct line, the “corporate spin, the carefully crafted lies” – tune in to the Democratic convention. ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos naturally was curious how Trump planned to top Monday’s smoky rock-star entrance at the convention – or even Wednesday’s Trump Helicopter entrance (on Tuesday, he’d shown up as a large disembodied head on a screen, from Trump Tower, Wizard-of-Oz style). I’d just have to digest that and talk it over and reshuffle my thoughts.

Dayna Dent, 69, a retiree and alternate delegate from Washington state told AFP she was “thrilled” by the speech. “We needed him. He’s a great conservative. He can unify just by giving an endorsement and he didn’t do that for us tonight”. “He invited all the Republican candidates, and they had a right to speak”.

Cruz said, though, he’s watching Trump carefully. “No big deal!” Earlier in the campaign season, Cruz vowed to back the eventual nominee.

Anne Mazone of Navasota, Texas, says with Cruz, what you see is what you get. Trump’s son Eric called it “classless”. “It’s not classless to highlight areas of policy where they can work together like border security, trade or fighting ISIS”.

The scene was one more example of the depth of the fissures that exist in IL – and among Republicans nationally – as the state’s delegation prepares to head home with Trump, the controversial businessman and former reality TV star, atop its November ticket.
