Cruz, Mariners give Servais 1st win, 10-2 over Rangers

Specifically, those you might hold against your former co-workers and/or employees.

The 22-year-old second baseman didn’t have a single walk in 43 spring training at-bats, but took a free pass against Hernandez to start the fifth inning.

Texas Rangers’ Rougned Odor, center, is congratulated by teammates after scoring a run on a RBI double hit by Justin Ruggiano, not pictured, during the second inning of a baseball game against the Seattle Mariners Wednesday, April 6, 2016, in Arlington, Texas. Cruz went 2-for-3 with a homer and a walk, drove in a run and scored three times. He didn’t have a ball hit in his direction and didn’t have a chance to bat in the bottom half of the inning, as the Angels lost 6-1. With one out, Mitch Moreland doubled to the gap in right-centerfield. Robinson Cano and Kyle Seager homered early for the Mariners, but the midgame mistakes cost them the lead in the debut of manager Scott Servais.

Closer Shawn Tolleson blew the save and took the loss after allowing five consecutive Mariner hits in the ninth, including a two-run homer by Robinson Cano. He went 1-5 with a 3.40 ERA in seven starts where the Rangers scored two runs or less.

Leonys Martin tied the game with a bloop double to left – his third hit of the game. Hernandez then walked Delino DeShields to load the bases and Shin-Soo Choo to force in a run. The Mariners won 10-2. Perhaps he would join the “wreck your ex’s day” party?

One game doesn’t make a season – the Rangers were thankful for that after an 8-0 shutout in Oakland a year ago and a disastrous home opener – but there were good signs despite being one-hit. There was finger pointing and jawing between the two managers and a few coaches as players started to edge closer to home plate as the possibility of a confrontation grew.

Okay, well, there’s more than one way to wreck a day. After Seth Smith homered – again on the first pitch – Wilhelmsen’s next pitch hit Iannetta on the left thigh.

There was more to it, and much it was caught live on the Root Sports Northwest field microphone. But order was soon restored.

“I feel like this is our identity – we’re going to run hard, play hard”, Rangers manager Jeff Banister said.

The chaos on the mound continued, however. Story also is the first player in baseball history to hit a home run for each of his first four hits.

Keone Kela replaced Lewis (1-0) to start the seventh, and the Mariners loaded the bases with two outs. “Don’t ever want to do that”. “I’m just trying to keep things simple and have a good approach at the plate”.

“That’s just part of the game”, Iannetta said later.

Texas sent lefty reliever Sam Freeman to Milwaukee for cash. Freeman had been DFA’d by the Rangers on March 29th. By forcing the action and running behind third baseman Kyle Seager, he should get an assist for the error, which was pivotal to a three-run rally by the Rangers.

The Rockies had 10 homers in the three-game series, three apiece against Arizona’s top three starters Zack Greinke, Shelby Miller and Corbin.
