Trump’s reference to getting along with people is an apparent reference to Cruz’s lack of popularity among many Republicans in Congress. In an interview with Fox News Sunday, Trump said: “Look at the way he’s dealt with the Senate, where he goes in there like a – you know, frankly like a little bit of a maniac”.

“I thought his remarks were very, very tough … to the African American community”, he said.

JAKE TAPPER: [Ted Cruz] said that Paris and San Bernardino had given a seriousness to the race that, in his view, would hurt you because of, quote, “the question of judgment”, which he says, “is a challenging question for you”. “He’ll never be able to get anything done, and that’s the problem with Ted”.

In an appearance on Fox News Sunday, moderator Chris Wallace asked Trump about remarks Cruz made privately last week to donors, questioning Trump’s judgment.

Jennifer Jackson of the Des Moines Register said in a video on the paper’s website: “It’s Cruz-mentum”. After asking Iowans “What the hell are you people doing to me?” and “How stupid are the people of Iowa?”.

“One of the things I have is really good judgment, and I think I have really great temperament”, he said.

The poll by Bloomberg and Des Moines Register, released on Saturday, showed Mr Cruz leading in Iowa with 31 per cent of those likely to attend the Republican caucuses, while Mr Trump received 21 per cent.

Texas US Senator Ted Cruz has solidified his lead among Republican presidential contenders in the politically crucial state of Iowa, a new poll showed. All the other GOP candidates received 3 or fewer percent support. Rubio of Florida is also trying to make an issue of Cruz’s immigration stance – insisting that Cruz has less of a hard line on the issue than he lets on.

“I like him. He’s been so nice to me”.

Trump ripped Cruz for parroting even his own most controversial ideas.

Third in the Des Moines Register/Bloomberg Politics poll is retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson with 13 percent, followed by Florida Senator Marco Rubio with 10 percent. There’s a group of people who are very sick.

“One of the reasons I’m sitting here and one of the reasons I’m so high in the polls is because it all started with the borders”, Trump told CNN. “Now that’s a question of strength, but it’s also a question of judgment”. Every state is vital, Trump told the crowd, because if he comes up just short in a brokered convention, the establishment will use it to keep him from being the nominee. “Because I actually get along with people much better than he does”.
