This math brings us to the second event in our litany of the hard-to-believe.
A Wall Street Journal/NBC News/Marist poll released on Sunday gave Trump a 15 point lead in Indiana. Then, they would battle it out in subsequent ballots at what would be a rather raucous Republican National Convention at Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena.
Still, Cruz already appears to be looking past the state in some ways. “If he’s the nominee, I take it you can’t support him anymore, can you?” Yesterday, delegates heard from Donald Trump and John Kasich.
The Cruz campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
“I think it all comes down to California, ” Mariani said.
He said the Trump campaign’s organization impressed him from its first contact in November, providing advice and help circulating petitions and printed matter to hand out at the polls.
Cruz balked at the suggestion he should even be taking a position, “I recognize that many in the media would love for me to surrender to Donald Trump”. And, he said, it puts Kasich on the sidelines for a while.
Asked if he respects Trump, Cruz would only say “I am glad Donald ran”.
On NBC’s “Meet the Press”, Cruz said he has momentum in Indiana based on his choice of former candidate Carly Fiorina for his vice president and Friday’s endorsement by Indiana Gov. Mike Pence. Trump swept all five Northeastern primary elections earlier in the week and enjoys a massive delegate advantage over his Republican rivals.

Wilson’s announcement Saturday at the Republican Party convention in Burlingame, California, is a key pickup for the Texas senator. He said it in a less delicate way, of course. DeWit said Trump yielded only two delegates from the at-large ballot as a result.

And they are preparing themselves for what impact Trump might have down-ticket on the Republican side.

Still, as things stand now, Trump is the favorite.

A loss by Trump, and Cruz, at least, lives on to fight another day.
