Crystal Palace bash Newcastle 5-1
Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren faced increasing pressure after a thumping 5-1 defeat at Crystal Palace on Saturday sent them to a third Premier League defeat in five games as they dropped into the relegation zone.

Alan Pardew has called on Newcastle United to rally around under-fire manager Steve McClaren following their thrashing by Crystal Palace. “It’s about coming through adversity and bad times, getting stronger, showing character”. We expect a reaction from them after the disappointment of losing at home (to Leicester 0-3). We know we’re doing the right things – I know that through experience.
In the wake of yet another demoralising display, 26-year-old Colback told the club’s official website: “We had a game plan and in the first 15-20 minutes it worked perfectly”.
The joy for the travelling fans was few and far between, only cheering as Cisse netted his first goal of the season, ensuring he has scored in all three matches he has played against Crystal Palace.
Palace extended their lead in the 41st minute with Wickham again the provider, the former England Under-21 worldwide crossing for Zaha to score with a volley that hit the turf and looped over Rob Elliot. We need to find the solution to that because we started bright, got the goal.
“But at the present moment when we get a setback we’re not recovering quickly enough”.
Events at St James’ Park in Newcastle’s city centre, are often said to be what life revolves around in the North East but Shearer believes that is no longer the case for the younger generation.
The Eagles midfielder was praising the work Pardew has done in lifting his side from relegation battlers to a team that is challenging to get into the top six.
McClaren, who is odds-on to be the next manager sacked, said: “We knew it was going to be tough”. A win at home this weekend will be a good way for them to get back on track and I think that they should win. Alan Pardew could not wait to get out of the club because the writing was on the wall.
“Our players were really on it today – it was a pivotal game, whoever the opposition was, in our season”.
