Orange County schools receives e-mail threat

Sprint and Verizon have signed roaming deals with Cuba’s state telecommunications company that benefit a small class of well-heeled American travelers.

Immediately following the announcement, American Airlines said it planned to submit a U.S.-Cuba service proposal to the U.S. Department of Transportation in hopes of “timely approval” to introduce scheduled service as soon as possible next year.

The deal won’t allow direct service to resume right away, but lays the groundwork for completing technical talks so scheduled airline flights can begin next year, likely in the first six months, officials said.

At least one major carrier, JetBlue, is now flying charter flights to Cuba.

Cuba maintains “full readiness to continue working toward building a relationship with the U.S.”, Castro said.

Last week, American Airlines launched charter flights between Los Angeles and Havana.

No commercial flights from Cuba to the US are included in the initial agreement.

The return of commercial flights could see numbers of United States tourists to Cuba increase by thousands a day, putting strain on the island’s tourist infrastructure – hotels and hostels in the country are already booked months ahead.

“Everybody should be happy because, through baseball, we’re uniting countries, ” Tony Castro, president of the Cuban Baseball Federation, said Thursday.
