Cuba, US Relations Today: Obama Commemorates Renewed Cuban Relations
Although the agreement will eventually make it easier to travel back and forth between the countries, the USA ban on general tourism to the Caribbean island remains in force.

The airline industry, on the other hand, already has high hopes for the flights to go on, with American Airlines planning on submitting a US-Cuba service proposal to the US Department of Transportation soon.
This marks a major step forward in relations between the two countries.

Commercial airline flights are due to resume between the United States and Cuba – a step in the ongoing thaw in relations between the two countries.
Nevertheless, this is more headway for the “long-forbidden island” that’s been off-limits to Americans for more than 50 years.
American Airlines praised the decision and expressed interest in adding more flights to Cuba.
“While U.S. law continues to prohibit travel to Cuba for tourist activities, a stronger civil aviation relationship will facilitate growth in authorized travel between our two countries – a critical component of the President’s policy toward Cuba”, the department said.
“No one should expect that, in order to normalize relations with the United States, Cuba will renounce the principles and ideals for which several generations of Cubans have struggled throughout more than half a century”, Castro said. The terminal at Jose Martí International Airport where the chartered USA planes land is relatively small so there are some physical limitations to the amount of commercial flights that can be scheduled. Since his announcement, a series of talks have between Cuban and American government officials have focused on improving greater commerce and trade, travel and free flow of information.
Speaking at a news conference in Havana, Cuba’s Director of US Affairs Josefina Vidal told reporters that the two countries were close to reaching a preliminary agreement.
Cuba and the US announced last week direct mail service would restart after a 52-year interruption.

Although President Barack Obama relaxed travel restrictions one year ago, booking flights to the island through chartered flights is burdensome.
