In primetime, 19-year-old Simone Biles is heavily favored to become the fourth consecutive American woman crowned Olympic all-around champion.
Rio de Janeiro: Michael Phelps powered to his fourth gold medal of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games – and his 22nd in total – on another incredible night in the Olympic Aquatics Stadium.
“The history him and I have had with one another, it’s something special and something I’ve never had in another competitor of mine”, Phelps said. Phelps won each time and Lochte finished second, third and second. She was so far ahead by the end that Britain’s Jazz Carlin might as well have been the entire length of the Amazon behind her.
The most decorated Olympian of all time lost the gold to Joseph Schooling of Signapore.
The world record holder, who won the event as a fresh-faced 15-year-old in London, is the overwhelming favourite after storming to victory in the 200 and 400m before adding gold in Wednesday’s 4x200m free relay. “Phelps with the gold”, he said.
He also has two silver medals and two bronze medals.
The excited call went silent as a closeup showed a grinning Phelps taking off his swimming cap to look up at the results of the race.
“I’ve been able to do everything I’ve ever put my mind to in this sport”.
But, what about those four non-gold medals? “It’s insane, it hasn’t sunk in yet”, said Schooling. “Gonna need some time off – just a break mentally and physically”. But what was even more remarkable was that Phelps was one of three swimmers to finish in a tie for the silver medal, joining Chad Le Clos of South Africa and Laszlo Cseh of Hungary in second place.

Phelps could also perform the so-called four-peat in the 100m butterfly here. 8 years after getting this photo with him.
