Cubs 6, Brewers 1: Nelson roughed up again

Billy Hamilton was on second base and Joey Votto on first after being walked intentionally in the seventh inning when Phillips lined a pitch from Nick Wittgen (3-2) to the gap in right-center field to drive in the go-ahead runs. But the right-hander struggled in Arizona, started three games for Atlanta in April previous year, moved to the bullpen and was released before signing with Chicago.

The Chicago Cubs go for a four-game sweep of Milwaukee on Thursday as they send their ace right-hander against a rising Brewers star.

“We’re scuffling right now to get some offense together”. Nelson (6-12, 4.07), comes in after giving up three runs in five innings against the Reds in a losing effort.

David Ross added a solo home run in the third inning for the Cubs, who won their third straight.

“They did a good job of grinding out at-bats”, he said.

Nelson has lost five straight starts, beginning with a defeat at the hands of the Cubs on July 22 in which he allowed four runs (two earned) over five innings. After a quick 1-2-3 inning by Jon Lester in the top of the first, Chicago pounded Jimmy Nelson for 5 runs in their first 6 batters.

“You get five runs after the bottom of the first, it. kind of relaxes you, you don’t have to grind as much”, Lester said.

Carl Edwards Jr., and Travis Wood.

“We know what we’re capable of”, Arrieta said following his last victory, a 13-2 decision over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday.

The Brewers got on the board in the sixth inning when Orlando Arcia drove in Keon Broxton on a fielder’s choice grounder.

Milwaukee loaded the bases on two singles and a walk in the second inning, but Lester got Nelson to ground into an inning-ending force out.

“We think we dodged a bullet there”, Milwaukee manager Craig Counsel said of Braun.

“I sprained my knee, sprained my ankle a little bit”, Braun said.

Chase Anderson was hit by a line drive off the bat of Khris Bryant, on the inner thigh near his left knee in the first inning.

The Brewers are 5-2 in their last 7 during game 4 of a series and 6-2 in Davies’ last 8 starts with 4 days of rest.
