Cubs, fans prepare for NLCS Game 1

So was 1907, the year the Cubs first won the World Series. An even longer drought will be ended if they win the Fall Classic – it’s 107 years since they were crowned World Champions.

They have since added left fielder Yoenis Cespedes in a trade, outfielder Michael Conforto was promoted, and third baseman David Wright and catcher Travis d’Arnaud came off the disabled list. But this is not an easy habit to break for the devoted faithful of a team that has not won a World Series since 1908.

There have been complaints throughout the internet about the array of American League teams throughout the playoffs. Of course, to show its doubters just how wrong they were, Chicago has defeated both the Pirates and the Cardinals to now reach the NLCS. After beating Houston in Game 5, they’re one series win away from returning.

The Mets last hoisted the World Series trophy in 1986. What is fact is this: These two historic franchises with hungry fan bases will meet in the National league Championship Series starting tonight at Citi Field. For instance, they never had to deal with rookie Kyle Schwarber, who slugged 16 home runs in 232 at-bats after arriving on June 16. Their pitching was keeping them competitive and in the race, but it wasn’t until these teams started hitting better that they really took off. “But we’ll take what we got”. They also have a clutch hitter in Daniel Murphy (73 RBIs in regular season). When this lineup is producing runs, the Mets are nearly unbeatable because of how good they are on the mound.

On the other hand the Mets too have performed superbly. Truly witty, intellectual and historically relevant comments such as “It’s been, like, a hundred years since the Cubs won”, and “You know the Ottoman Empire still existed when the Cubs won”, or even the simple yet elegant “You guys suck” are quite common.

2003: Against the Braves, the Cubs lost a potential series-clinching Game 4 of the NLDS at Wrigley Field, before winning Game 5 in Atlanta.

While on the surface it’s a shocking decision to see the Cubs choose Lester over Arrieta to start Game 1 of the NLCS, it was absolutely the right decision to make. Well, the Cubs certainly have that with Jon Lester and Jake Arrieta. They came back from 2-0 down to beat Texas 3-2 and book their spot in the ALCS. This is the beginning of an era during which the expectations and standards for the team will rise to meet the level of play that the team has been demonstrating lately.

The Mets’ rotation probably has more depth than Chicago’s.

At Wrigley Field, the Mets had lined up Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard and Matt Harvey to start back-to-back-to-back for the first time.

Chicago boasts the sport’s most respected manager in Joe Maddon, a powerful young lineup led by Rookie of the Year favorite Kris Bryant and a dynamic pitching duo that can compete with any in the league. The depth of the pitching and the back-end brilliance of Familia gives them a legitimate chance to neutralize the Cubs’ tremendous power.

Two great staffs. Two offenses with the clutch gene. This may be a surprise, seeing as the Cubs went an astonishing 7-0 against the Mets in the regular season, but these are two different teams playing now. And somehow, other than home plate umpire Dale Scott initially ruling Martin-Choo play dead, the umpires didn’t get anything blatantly wrong.
