CLEVELAND – Cleveland Indians designated hitter Carlos Santana was out of the lineup against the Los Angeles Angels on Friday, a day after suffering a contusion on the right side of his head when he was hit by a foul ball in the dugout.

All the trio did was combine to go 7-for-13 with four home runs, seven RBIs and seven runs scored during the Cubs’ 13-2 shellacking of the Cardinals at Wrigley Field.

The loss assured the Cardinals that they can not leave Chicago after this four-game series any better than when they came. The Cubs’ runaway lead in the division, the lack of Holliday, and the overall malaise of the Cardinals’ play served as a backdrop for Wainwright’s start opposite Cubs ace Jake Arrieta.
“In this situation, we needed a win”, Wainwright said. I just didn’t show up.
Wainwright slipped to 9-7 and his ERA spiked to what would be a career-high 4.72, nearly undoing all the success he had in July to shave it down below 5.00. It was Arrieta’s first victory since June 27 after five consecutive winless starts. Chicago eventually beat St. Louis to reach the NL Championship Series before losing to the New York Mets. In fact, Wainwright had given up a run and had two men on before he even got an out, but the evidence of Wainwright’s struggles was clear by the time Addison Russell doubled in the second run of the game.

Wainwright led off the third inning with a double, and true to the offense the Cardinals mustered against Arrieta (14-5), he was stranded there. “You can’t make him do it twice”. “He just ate (innings) for us the last time. You can’t do it to him again”. The Cubs have extended the margin to 14 games over the Cardinals by claiming the first two games of the series. Arrieta lost the shutout with one out in the fifth when Stephen Piscotty clubbed his 16th homer of the season, a solo shot to center.He departed with two out in the sixth and a runner on base for reliever Justin Grimm, making his second appearance since being recalled from Triple-A Iowa on Thursday. Szczur and Baez added two-run shots in the seventh before Gyorko connected in the eighth.
Luke Weaver, a 22-year-old righty and one of the Cardinals’ top pitching prospects, will make his major league debut on Saturday against Kyle Hendricks (11-7, 2.17), who is 7-1 with a 1.06 ERA in his last 10 outings.

The righthander reviewed his start, and it was short enough that he was able to see it three or four times. He hit Szczur in the second inning with a pitch that was supposed to be a cut fastball away and instead was an 80-mph slider that grazed Szczur’s shoulder.
