Cubs land closer Chapman from Yankees

After no charges were filed, Major League Baseball suspended Chapman 30 games under the policy, ultimately serving 29 games because of a postponed game.

The Cubs get the closer they need to shut the door when they have the lead in the 9th inning.

“Obviously, we are aware of the circumstances surrounding Aroldis Chapman’s suspension earlier this season”. In 31 appearances with the Yankees, Chapman went 3-0 with a 2.01 ERA with 20 saves fanning 44 while walking only eight batters in 31 1/3 innings pitched. For Chapman, perhaps baseball’s most dominating closer, the Cubs surrendered four players to the New York Yankees – including an elite prospect, shortstop Gleyber Torres.

I just don’t think Chapman is a significant upgrade over Rondon.

Chapman, 28, is a left-hander widely regarded as the best closer in Major League Baseball. “They’re looking at the guys with expiring contracts first – though not Beltran right now”. “They’re fighting to get that ring, so it might be a good experience for me to be there”.

Chapman saved 146 games with a 2.17 ERA in six years with the Reds before he was traded to NY last December after a deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers fell through when it was learned Florida police investigated an accusation of domestic violence involving the Cuban pitcher.

Prosecutors declined to file charges, citing conflicting accounts, and Chapman was suspended for the first 29 games of the season, losing $1,856,557 of his $11,325,000 salary.

“I want to thank the New York Yankees for trusting and supporting me, and I wish nothing but the best for the Yankees organization and my former teammates”, Chapman said in a statement. “I feel like part of the family here”. He was the first player penalized a finite number of games under Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy.

“The Yankees did a great job of getting some very talented players”, Epstein said.

Chapman also added that he has learned from the incident. This was a nice haul for the Cubs, and this move should make them the favorite to win the World Series. McKinney, the seventh-ranked prospect in the Cubs’ system by Baseball America, batted.252 with one home run and 31 RBIs with a.355 on-base percentage at Double-A Tennessee.

Nova is not the first Yankees starter to be linked in trade rumors this summer, as Michael Pineda and Nathan Eovaldi are also said to be available on a weak market for starting pitchers.

“We’re disappointed we swung and missed in our efforts to sign him as an global free agent back in the 2013 class, but certainly you keep your eyes on players you’ve liked in the past and he was definitely a target for us”, Cashman said.
