Cubs LHP Jon Lester has no-hitter through 6 against Cards

Cubs pitcher Jon Lester lost his no-hit bid against the St. Louis Cardinals when Jhonny Peralta singled with one out in the seventh inning Monday night.

I don’t know if I want to endure another game of watching the Cardinals act out a textbook instructional DVD against the Cubs, and of course here comes a doubleheader today.

Lester finally notched his first hit in the majors with a line drive that ricocheted off Lackey’s leg for an infield single in the second inning. Despite giving up two runs (neither of which were his fault), he had an incredible outing. Jhonny Peralta ended that with a hot smash down to Kris Bryant at third that couldn’t be handled, ending Lester’s streak of 18 batters retired.

Lackey, who was a teammate of Lester’s in Boston in 2010-2014, struck out 4 and gave up 6 hits while walking 1.

No, wait, second and third, as Heyward stole the base.

First and third, one out, tie ballgame, and Starlin Castro at the plate-Kolten Wong, this is your scene.

Pirates 2, Padres 1: Pedro Alvarez singled home the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning, sending Pittsburgh to its eighth win in 10 games.

Casper, the Cubs’ television play-by-play announcer, mentioned in the sixth inning that Lester had a “no-hitter” going through six. Not only did he do his job, put the offense put runs on the board and defense was strong behind him. After a long game Monday and a game early Tuesday, I give the slight edge to he home team here. One out and a runners at first and third. It is wonderful that Wong is not on the All Star Team.

CHICAGO – Chris Sale’s historic strikeout run came to an end, but the dynamic lefty outdueled his former mentor Mark Buehrle and led the Chicago White Sox to an 4-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday.

Twins 4, Orioles 2, 10 inn.: Brian Dozier hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning to lift Minnesota to the victory.

When it rains, it pours, and the Cardinals poured it on late in this 6-0 loss. The Cardinals have won five straight against the Cubs after a 6-0 victory to open the four-game series.

After the deluge of runs, Rosenthal sat down and Mitch Harris entered to pitch the ninth. Harris (3.44 ERA) had recently been recalled from Memphis Triple-A. The Cardinals have routed the Cubs this season with poised, timely baseball.

The Cardinals (54-28) are the best team in baseball because they capitalize on mistakes like that.

There is to be a double-header today, weather permitting.

But then, nearly every game the Cubs play against the Cardinals becomes a forfeit. He made two big-league starts last season (four earned runs in 11 innings vs. Washington and Cincinnati).

SEATTLE – Nick Castellanos smacked one of Detroit’s four solo homers as the Tigers thumped the Seattle Mariners 12-5 in the opener of a three-game set.

Take a bow Jon Lester
