Manager Joe Maddon said Wednesday night that Joe Smith, who was acquired from the Angels an hour before the August 1 trade deadline, would assume more late-inning duties despite the ascent of 24-year-old rookie reliever Carl Edwards Jr. Strop left the game.
The Cubs recalled right-hander Justin Grimm from Triple-A Iowa.
Strop’s timetable would make it possible for him to return before the end of the regular season and be available for the postseason.
The Cubs already have been without Hector Rondon, who has been dealing with triceps tightness.
Manager Joe Maddon told reporters following Wednesday’s victory that Joe Smith would assume additional late-inning responsibilities in Strop’s absence.

In his fourth season with the Cubs the reliever is 2-2 with a 2.89 ERA with 21 holds.
