Cubs win 11th straight, Szczur hits 2 HRs to rout Cardinals

St. Louis Cardinals leftfielder Matt Holliday sustained a broken right thumb during Thursday night’s game against the Chicago Cubs and will be headed to the 15-day disabled list, the team announced. “That not a bad thing”, he said.

“This 11 game winning streak is special, but we want to be playing our best baseball going into October”.

Anthony Rizzo drew a bases-loaded walk in the 11th inning to bring home Willson Contreras with the winning run as the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 Thursday for their 10th consecutive victory.

Szczur, who recorded his first multihomer game, and Kris Bryant each had three hits.

“I know that I’m not out for the season and I’m going to be back (next) month”, he said. The three-time All-Star is 0-2 in his last five starts, during which he allowed 21 runs in 25 2/3 innings.

When asked if he thought his season is over, though, Holliday said, “I doubt it”.

Martinez allowed three runs and seven hits over six innings. In his most recent outing, he fired eight shutout innings Saturday in a 4-0 win over the A’s in Oakland.

The Cards not only has lost the match but also lost their slugger Matt Holliday in the 10 Inning, as he was hit on the right hand and broken his thumb by Mike Montgomery’s 94 miles per hour fastball.

But the St. Louis Cardinals manager might have also be offering free advice to the National League Central-leading Chicago Cubs as they navigate uncharted waters as a potential World Series favorite. He was replaced in left field by Brandon Moss. On a day where Maddon rested Dexter Fowler, Jason Heyward and Ben Zobrist ($253 million combined in guaranteed money), it only took two innings before the Cubs wore out Wainwright, an Opening Day starter and a World Series champion.

Bryant hit another RBI double in the second and Contreras sent his seventh homer halfway up into the bleachers in left-center to make it 7-0. Wainwright hit Szczur’s left shoulder with a pitch in the second inning, and mop-up reliever Jerome Williams drilled Chris Coghlan’s left knee in the seventh, but there were no real fireworks.

Phillies 10, Rockies 6: Ryan Howard hit a grand slam and drove in five runs to help Jake Thompson earn his first major league victory for Philadelphia.

“We’ve got some young talented players that are going to have to step up and get the job done”, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. Garza (4-4) allowed 2 runs and 7 hits in 6 innings. Wainwright gave up seven runs in a career-low two innings in the start.
