In the 13-inning game on Sunday (a Cubs walk-off win), Harper reached base seven times (six walks and a HBP) without an official at-bat, another Major League Baseball record. Including Sunday’s game, Harper has now walked 30 times in 31 games so far this season, with eight of the intentional variety. Harper also set the record for most walks in a four game series with 13.
Had Ryan Zimmerman gotten one more hit behind Harper, the Nationals would probably would have won the game much earlier. The reigning NL MVP walked 13 times in this series.
BREWERS 5, REDS 4 Jonathan Lucroy greeted Ross Ohlendorf (3-3) with a tiebreaking home run leading off the eighth inning, then caught Billy Hamilton stealing for the final out – a call upheld in a video review. I honestly forgot he was one of their starters.
The Chicago Cubs have finally found a way to combat against Washington Nationals slugger Bryce Harper. “We did what we thought we had to do today, and it happened to work, so good for our guys”.
If anyone can relate to the handle-with-care treatment Bryce Harper received over the weekend in Chicago, it’s Barry Bonds, who knows a thing or two about being avoided as if he was a lit stick of dynamite.
Key moment: Bryce Harper stepped to the plate seven times on Sunday and reached base seven times without putting a ball in play. They left 14 men on base, and left Nationals Manager Dusty Baker to analyze the middle of his order.
Maddon explained the logic behind walking Harper after Sunday’s game, saying, “Why tempt fate like that?”
wbbNationals’ Ryan Zimmerman reacts as he grounds out to Chicago Cubs third baseman Javier Baez during the 12th inning of a baseball game Sunday, May 8, 2016, in Chicago. ‘Sure you beat us four straight, and held our best hitter to one hit in the entire series, but slap those wins with an asterisk because you got them like a bunch of cowards.’ Great, so what’s the make you?
However, Arrieta’s earned run average went up a few points and now sits at 1.13 on the year while Trevor Roark, who pitched six solid innings, enters his next outing with a mark of 2.03.

Reliever Trevor Cahill already had hit for himself in the seventh – helping the team score two runs to tie the game – to save the last bench player, Javy Baez. Hopefully, the guy behind me can get it done. Reigning NL Cy Young victor Jake Arrieta allowed three runs (two earned) and six hits in five innings, striking out seven and walking four. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. on CSN.
