Cueto struggles, Giants swept by lowly Padres
Cueto, still sapped by a respiratory ailment, was not sharp in a 5-3 loss and the San Diego Padres ran through the thick part of the Giants rotation while completing a three-game sweep. After losing nine straight to the Giants, the Padres have won the past two and go for their first three-game sweep of the season on Sunday.

Jackson had struck out three, walked four and thrown 72 pitches Sunday in his first big league start since 2014.
After striking out Brandon Crawford to open the seventh, Jackson bobbled Gregor Blanco’s grounder for an error and then walked Ramiro Pena before allowing Gillaspie’s homer on a 3-1 pitch. Alexei Ramirez is 10-for-19 with a home run against Cueto, who took the loss in Tuesday’s All-Star Game at Petco Park after allowing three runs in 1 2/3 innings.Jackson is being promoted from Triple-A El Paso to start in place of All-Star Drew Pomeranz, who was traded to Boston on Thursday. He kept them to only one run total in those three games, allowing just 13 hits while collecting 25 strikeouts.
Entering Sunday’s series finale against the Giants at Petco Park, the Padres had never had a pitcher throw a no-hitter. He pitched a no-hitter in 2010 for Arizona. The 32-year-old was released by Miami last month and has a 7.02 ERA in five minor league starts this season, but Padres manager Andy Green remains optimistic. His status was iffy enough that Jake Peavy, who is scheduled to start Tuesday in Boston, watched the early innings from the bullpen.
The San Diego Chargers media attacked Joey Bosa this weekend for the oddest reason.
“I’m ready to go”, a smiling Cueto said through interpreter Erwin Higueros when asked about his week in San Diego. Gillaspie crushed a 3-run home run to right field, the first and only hit Jackson gave up.
Cueto (13-2) gave up just four home runs over his first 16 starts.
Brandon Maurer pitched the ninth for his third save.
Cueto appeared to run out of gas in the sixth, when he issued a leadoff walk and a single to the only two batters he faced.
San Diego’s Yangervis Solarte homered in the seventh, his ninth. With Madison Bumganer and Cueto leading the Giants’ staff, it’s easy to see why San Francisco has the most wins in baseball.
He said he woke up Sunday with a pain in his left side, but was able to work through it.
